MUI also recommends young bankers obtain professional qualifications while they are working in banks, so they can take advantage of the actual working experience and practise what they learn. In this way, they can build a professional network, gain customers’ trust and prepare for greater achievement when opportunities arise.
A strategic bridge
Describing the HKIB as a bridge between the industry and regulators, MUI says, on the one hand, the Institute shares the latest regulatory requirements, guidelines and international best practices with members, and on the other hand, it reflects the opinions of the industry to the government and relevant stakeholders. The HKIB also organises delegations to connect industry players from Hong Kong with Mainland counterparts, especially the regulators. This provides Hong Kong banks and HKIB members with opportunities to keep themselves abreast of Mainland China’s regulatory environment as well as to gain insights into new market opportunities.
Strategic thinking leads to innovative solutions
Echoing what MUI said, FUNG Siu-ming, Honorary Advisor to the HKIB and former Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) and Deputy Chief Executive and Alternate Chief Executive of Chong Hing Bank, agrees that it is important for fellow bankers to innovate with attention and devotion. With more than 40 years of local banking experience, mainly focusing on the loans business and credit
risk management, FUNG believes being attentive, observant and committed at work are the key attitudes for success.
FUNG embarked on his banking career in June 1974. After completing his nine-month internship, he stepped circumspectly into the recessionary year of 1975, due to the oil embargo which started
in 1973. Reflecting on the global economic crisis and the massive Hong Kong bankruptcies that followed, FUNG recalls that he was assigned by his employer to collect non-performing loans (NPL).
In one restless night, kept awake by the requirements of senior bankers, the advice of lawyers and the loan collection experiences of his teammates, FUNG stumbled upon a new lawful track to recover more than HKD300,000 from a specific NPL. After confirming the feasibility the subsequent day with the bank’s well-known legal counsel that looked after the collection of all the bank’s NPLs, the bank’s Credit General Manager was amazed with FUNG’s innovative thinking. “How could a young man with less than twenty-months’ banking experience have first come up with such a lawful loan recovery tactic before the external legal counsel?” he asked. In those days, HKD300,000 was not a small amount, FUNG recalls. “My junior officer-grade monthly salary was less than HKD2,000.”

梅月嫦指出,在這個大環境下,香港銀行學會的 「銀行專業會士」(Certified Banker或簡稱CB) 專業資格,課程由不同的教學模塊組成,涵蓋銀 行實務和管理各大範疇,能幫助銀行從業員及 有志投身銀行工作的大專院校學生提升及掌握
所需技能,應對快速轉變的銀行業環境。
「從前,我們要培訓一名新人,需要在崗位上邊 做邊學,但僅限於該職能的實務而已,培訓難免 欠缺系統。但CB課程內容全面,系統化教授銀 行業不同領域的實務和管理技巧,並不時因應 市場和監管環境轉變而作出更新,學生畢業後 出路廣闊,專業資格還可以終身受用。」
她特別寄語有意從事銀行業的年青人或新入行 的同事:「不要抱著得過且過的心態,應加以利 用自己在銀行工作的機會,爭取考取專業資格, 從而實習學到的知識,堅持下去,這樣才能在業 界建立人際網絡,與客戶建立信任,將來再看好 機會就能大展拳腳。」
