CHENG believes while banking and tech each have their own advantages and constraints, they complement each other.
For instance, technological innovation can create new market opportunities, reform existing products and services and improve cost-effectiveness. However, CHENG points out while digital transformation in the banking sector is the big trend, technology is only one of the solutions. Under this premise, traditional banks must integrate Fintech into their business to create new products and services for continued growth. He says for Fintech solutions to be successful, “finance” will continue to be the mainstay.
“After all, the banking industry is a strictly regulated industry.
We must bear in mind the basic principles,” CHENG notes. While exploring innovative business ideas, it is important to follow the laws and regulations. As such, when promoting Fintech, the basic principles of banking business cannot be overlooked. For instance, when planning for deployment, management and other stakeholders should fully understand the goals and expected results and communicate with team members how to achieve them.
Expanding horizons
When it comes to career progression, CHENG suggests that,
as much as possible, bankers acquire the skills and knowledge of different businesses and functional units. To broaden their horizons, they can also benefit by being open to opportunities to work with people from other countries and cultures and cultivate cross-disciplinary capabilities. “To move out of your comfort zone is easier said than done, but as long as you work hard and dare to explore, you will find many opportunities for success,” says CHENG who is speaking from experience. In
2001, he was offered an opportunity to participate in a special global project in HSBC’s New York office. Through that six-week engagement, he was offered a secondment opportunity to move to New York and work as part of a global team for three years. In spite of the tragic 9/11 events of 2001, he moved to live in New York. On completion of the assignment, he was transferred to HSBC’s Vancouver office where he stayed for more than two years before returning to Hong Kong to continue his career.
“These unique overseas assignments and my exposure to global operations broadened my perspective, knowledge
and experiences tremendously,” says CHENG who enjoyed
the opportunity to work with some inspirational leaders
from across the group and team members from different cultures and countries. “Despite the challenges I faced, the experience honed my leadership and management skills. These valuable experiences were of great benefit to my subsequent management roles,” CHENG says. BT
BT
